There are still a few pinhead sized spots remaining in the very bottom. Tomorrow morning I'll post more pictures and the results. I am giving it a good vigorous shaking every 30 minutes or so. I promptly poured in both of the 32oz bottles and shook it around, I even drained a little through the petcock lines to dissolve any rust in the tubes. ($200 is a lot of beer making ingredients) Dew, but if it works I'll be the happiest kid in the world. I'm pretty skeptical, the stuff looks like Mt. I found some at Auto Zone and $15 later I had two small 32oz jugs of the stuff. I looked up the company and apparently they developed the stuff for removing rust on US tanks and gear. ![]() Turns out they have rust removing chemicals that people are pooping themselves over. I did some more research on rusty tank repair, removal and sealing. I was pissed, plastic Clarke tanks cost $200 for this bike. The tank has so much rust in the bottom, that I can hear it rattling around after it was drained and dried. I drained the tank and the gas came out brown.Īwesome, I have a rust filled tank. The only thing left I haven't repaired/fixed is the gas tank and fuel lines. With two tired legs, sore feet (don't kickstart in sneakers) and an empty can of starter fluid we got it to run for 2 minutes. Then I enlisted the help of my slightly heavier twin to help kick start the sucker. Well I researched "the Drill", cleaned the carbs, I replaced the spark plug, installed a new battery, bridged the side-stand switch and still it wouldnt' start without a fight. I'm not a heavyweight at 6' and 165lbs, but I should be capable of kickstarting a thumper right?!?! I've seen the You-Tube videos of little girls kicking them over and everyone telling me to trust "the Drill". Because of this it's been a real pain to kick over. It had been stored in a barn for god knows how long. When I saw a 1986 xt600 for $600, I bought it immediately. I did research on all of the 600ish thumpers. Make sure they’re all tightly blocked, or the gasoline and ball bearings will just spill out.After running across this site, I became addicted to the idea of a dual-sport and had to have one. The best way to manage this is to put short lengths of hose over all of the openings and use heavy clamps to block off the ends of the hoses. Your motorcycle fuel tank needs to be well blocked before you put in the ball bearings and the diesel. The same applies to the low fuel sensor although not all bikes have these. ![]() If there are any, remove them before you begin work on cleaning the motorcycle fuel tank. ![]() See if your motorcycle also comes with fuel valves that are linked to the gas tank. Knowing what components are on your bike will make this a lot easier. With the tank drained, take care to unhook the gas lines or vacuum lines from the motorcycle fuel tank. Much depends on the make of your motorcycle but you’ll definitely need to drain the tank first to avoid gasoline spilling all over the place and over you. There are a number of basic techniques for removing a motorcycle fuel tank and if you follow them thoroughly, you’ll manage the task quite easily. Gasoline is extremely flammable and you don’t want to set your fuel tank on fire. Make sure you don’t have any open flames around when flushing the tank and don’t smoke any cigarettes. ![]() Failure to do so will mean you’ll end up with a blocked or clogged fuel line. Before you do this, however, shake the tank to be certain you’ve got all the ball bearings out. When you flush the tank out prior to putting it back on the bike, use gasoline instead of diesel. The effort, however, will be more than worthwhile. Be aware that it can take quite a lot of shaking in order to fully clean out the motorcycle fuel tank. The diesel works in a different way to gas as the rust particles will be suspended in it, making it easier to dump them out later. ![]()
